TSE x64

x64 technology is changing the face of computing. 64-bit processors have become the standard in new servers shipped today, providing the power required for tomorrow's computing needs and the 32-bit compatibility necessary for so many of today's software applications.

This is none more relevant than in the Server Based Computing world, where utilizing Microsoft Windows Terminal Services you can centralize applications and have user's connect and run those applications from the server. With the use of Windows Server 2003 and 2008 x64 editions on 64-bit architecture, previous architectural OS resource limitations are removed enabling more scalable, higher performing computing solutions than equivalent 32-bit offerings.

In order to allow our customers to take advantage of these scalability and performance related benefits, Propalms released TSE 5.0 x64 Edition and have since released TSE 6.0 which has a single installer supporting both 32bit and 64bit environments.

Compatibility

32-bit application compatibility makes Propalms TSE x64 Edition a compelling choice for companies wishing to ease their migration across to a fully 64-bit architecture. It allows the strategic deployment of 64-bit applications without the risk and overhead of running 64-bit windows on the desktops.

Performance

As previously mentioned. '64-bit architecture removes kernel virtual address space limitations that affect the number of sessions that are supported by the operating system in the 32-bit architecture. On a 32-bit system there is an effective limit of 300 user sessions for typical Knowledge Worker scenarios. (The actual user session limit is affected by the number of applications running in the session, resource consumption by each application, and user activity patterns.) On a 64-bit system, the theoretical user session limit is much higher. The low overhead in terms of CPU consumption in the x64 architecture makes it possible for Terminal Services deployments to take advantage of the new generation of high performance 64-bit CPUs (specifically the multi-core configurations) to support a larger number of users on a single server. Synthetic benchmark results were able to support as many as 600 users on a single server. This is well beyond the 32-bit architectural limitations.'
